Anise seeds were a prized item in ancient Greece and Rome, and in the East, the seeds were even used to pay taxes. The anise plant is from the carrot family and can grow up to three feet tall. The plants bloom to reveal small white or yellow flowers and have a very nice aroma.
The high concentration of anethole (an essential oil) gives the Aniseed its strong, pleasant fragrance. Once dried, the seeds can be ground into a powder that stores well in the proper conditions.
