This One Kitchen Ingredient Is All You Need To Exfoliate Your Skin

This One Kitchen Ingredient Is All You Need To Exfoliate Your Skin

You come home after a long day of work and running errands, and you see your reflection in the mirror.

A splash of water on your face just won’t do…

There is just something so satisfying about exfoliating your face at the end of a sweaty, busy day.

Our skin is exposed to a disturbing number of environmental pollutants on a daily basis. Eventually, the grime builds up — and while I’d rather not know about it, I can’t help but notice it.

Not So Long Ago…

My vanity shelf was lined with bottles of half-empty cleansers and exfoliating scrubs. Products with empty promises of exfoliating away dead skin cells and unclogging pores.

Heck, they could have promised to remove all my imperfections and I would have believed them. Little did I know at the time, these exfoliating scrubs were contributing to my irritated skin and wreaking havoc on the environment.

Some of these pollutants are out of our control, yet we most certainly can reduce the number of toxins we expose our skin to by switching to alternative natural products.

What’s Wrong With Conventional Exfoliating Products?

Many conventional exfoliating scrubs contain plastic microbeads. Coupled with a host of other nasty chemicals, they do more harm than good to both your health and the environment.

These microbeads can absorb toxins like a sponge and bypass waste-water filtration systems. When they leach into our waterways, fish may mistake them as food. The plastic, along with the toxins they absorb, can wreak havoc on their digestive tracts. These plastic microbeads can make their way up the food chain and onto your plate.

Thankfully, many governments have been taking action to ban the use of plastic microbeads in beauty products but not all brands have gotten the memo.

What’s A Better Alternative?

Make your own natural exfoliating scrub, of course!

The 1 ingredient you need can also be found in your kitchen pantry — coconut sugar.

Coconut sugar is a multi-purpose ingredient you can use for both cooking and in beauty products. Win-win!

Why I Love Exfoliating With Coconut Sugar

  1. It’s not refined. Coconut sugar is simply boiled-down sap from the coconut palm flower.
  2. It contains trace amounts of micronutrients like zinc and iron (unlike other refined sugars).
  3. Coconut sugar is finer in texture and gentler on the skin.
  4. Coconut trees are traditionally more sustainably grown without irrigation, unlike large mono-cropped sugarcane fields. By using coconut sugar for exfoliating (and cooking), you’re supporting an industry that’s also better for the bigger picture of the planet.
Coconut Sugar Scrub
Not so long ago, my vanity shelf was lined with bottles of half-empty cleansers and exfoliating scrubs. I tossed them all once I learned about exfoliating with coconut sugar! Gently scrub away dead skin, pollutants, and grime easily and naturally!
    Ingredients
    • 1teaspoon Wildly Organic Coconut Sugar
    • 1drop essential oil(optional -- choose a skin-loving oil such as rose, lavender, geranium, ylang-ylang or chamomile)
    Instructions
    1. Simply add a splash of water (and optional drop of essential oil) to the coconut sugar in the palm of your hand so it slightly dissolves.
    2. Gently rub in between your two palms.
    3. Lightly massage in a circular motion around your face, and when you feel the sugar dissolve, wash away with water.
    4. Following this, dry your face by dabbing with a towel and moisturize with Wilderness Family Naturals Coconut Oil.
    Recipe Notes
    • You don't need to exfoliate your skin everyday; once or twice per week is enough.
    • Keep a small jar of coconut sugar handy in the bathroom with a teaspoon.
