The Connection Between Coconut Oil, Carbon, & Goats

To give you some background on the clinical benefits of coconut oil we have to start with the medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) contained within the oil.

MCTs are 6 to 10 carbons long and have tremendous health benefits.

They may be used to increase metabolic rate (giving you cellular energy) and are very popular among those following the Paleo lifestyle.

MCTs metabolize in a fraction of the time of a long-chain fatty acid without accumulating in the body as fat. Instead, they are absorbed intact, taken directly to the liver, and utilized for energy. Coconut oil is the best whole foods source of MCTs.

Furthermore, coconut oil contains an abundance of caprylic acid and capric acid. The root of these words is “capra”, meaning “goat”.

These 6-, 8-, and 10-carbon fatty acids are found in abundance in goat’s milk. Likewise, 6-, 8-, and 10-carbon fatty acids are the most abundant fatty acids in most processed MCT oils. They are also found in human breast milk and have been added to infant formulas as well. (Source.)

Yet, MCTs, capric acid, and caprylic acid — and all their benefits — are not why I recommend coconut oil to my patients.

While the ketogenic community flooded the Internet with the reported benefits of processed MCT oil, they allowed one medium-chain triglyceride to escape recognition:

Lauric acid — a 12-carbon fatty acid.

I became intrigued with lauric acid way before becoming intrigued with the household uses of coconut oil.

Coconut oil contains nearly 50% lauric acid. Lauric acid has long been touted for its powerful antimicrobial activity and has played a vital role in working with my chronically infected patients (especially in a concentrated ester form). (Source.)

Systemic yeast overgrowth, gut disturbances, and Lyme’s patients have all benefited from the use of lauric acid.

It’s not necessarily true that one fraction of coconut oil is better than another. Generally, the shorter MCTs are the thermogenic, energetic powerhouses. And the longer lauric acid is the systemic “critter-killer” that can help kill harmful viruses and bacteria in the body.
